AGE OF THE REBEL MERLOT 2018
SMALL BATCH #1228 bottles – W.O. Franschhoek
(Sold per case of 6 bottles)
Handpicked from one of the farms at the back reached of the Franschhoek valley – 6 tons / ha, low yielding vines.
So after our first 2013 Merlot production & heartbreak 2014 vintage that was destroyed in the warehouse fire…. We skipped some emotional mourning years… and after the great success we had in our Cabernet Franc from Franschhoek, we decided it is time for a Merlot from Franschhoek. The 2 main cultivars we made in Chateau Angelus, St Emilion in France, was Cabernet Franc and Merlot – I wanted to create a true traditional Bordeaux component – A Merlot that can stand on its own, has some traditional old school rings to it, but has a lot of finesse and style.
No fancy stuff on this one – it was all the grapes. Normal grape sorting before destemming and sending the wine into our gravity-fed fermenters. Normal twice a day pump-overs and 3-4 times a day punch downs… old school way, gave this wine its aging potential. Malolactic fermentation took place in barrel and the wine was then aged for 20 months in predominantly 300L French oak barrels. 30% new oak. 3 x 300 barrels were chosen and blended for this batch.
TASTING VS DRINKING NOTE
Traditional style aka.. The more French Bordeaux, the classical style… not as rebel as what I would have wanted to, but Merlot has a soft spot! Black current and Cassis upfront nose, with a slight Thyme herb and Biltong back aroma. Grippy tannins, lace with the same smoked Jamon Imerico, as the 2014 had. A real crowd pleaser and super structured wine, to blend into our Small Batch portfolio.
