VINEYARDS

These grapes reign from the Kronendal Boutique Wine farm. We contracted their whole harvest in 2019, which only resulted in 2000 bottles… so really boutique! The grapes were handpicked two weeks apart, sorted by hand, bunch by bunch, and fermented in open-top fermenters on the Downing wine farm in Stellenboach. If you look at Kronendal’s plantings.. to be precise! They have 1100 Shiraz, 500 Mourvedre, 100 Tempranillo, and 100 Viognier vines. In 2019, the Tempranillo took a massive knock in the drought.. also being the vines planted at the bottom of the Durbanville hills… it so happened that they uprooted them in 2019/2020 since they never recovered. Viognier was insignificant low, but yes, there is maybe a few kg’s in the mix.

WINEMAKER NOTES

The skins of the grapes were thin and the 2019 ripening season was hot and dry.. so caution was a priority for such delicate skins during fermentation and pressing.

WINEMAKING

Punch-downs were the order of the day until we reached around 8 Balling. We pressed at 4 Balling, to prevent over-extraction of tannins at the end of fermentation. We kept the Shiraz and Mourvedre apart and only blended accordingly, before bottling. After tasting and blending, we ended up with a 90% Shiraz and 10% Mourvedre blend…. We kept some Mourvedre apart to bottle on its own! The Shiraz was kept 50% in stainless steel with 30% New French Oak (Staves) and the other 50% in 3rd fill French 225L barrels. The Mourvedre was also kept in 3rd fill French oak barrels. Both wines were aged for 14 months.

TASTING VS DRINKING NOTE

Spicy, white pepper with hints of biltong and savoury aromas, balanced out with ripe blackberry fruit. I mouthful of juicy tannins and meaty-sweet spice flavours keep lingering on the pallet. A real quaffer of a wine… more modern styled, yet delicate and classic at the same time.
